Touchy family runs up energy bill

My Heating plus A/C system entirely got to toil out for these past three afternoons

My family has no boundaries. We’re kind of an unhealthy Bunch. We’ve all been through a lot together, plus I do not know if it’s definitely brought us closer together or push us further apart over the years. I can tell you that this past weekend was the first time they’ve ever come plus visited me in my new home. And I have lived here for about five years now. We’re just not a unquestionably tight bunch. When they do come into town, I abruptly remember why my buddy and I do not spend so much time together. They are so negative, all they do is complain. It’s like they are never happy, comfortable or relaxed. Meanwhile, I try to live my life the opposite way. It definitely difficult when they rack up my bi-weekly bills plus then head out of town. I willnever forget, this past weekend, the thing they were most interested in was definitely my central control unit, however for whatever reason, they were completely aghast at the high outdoor air temperatures. I do not know why they were surprised, but they didn’t expect it to be hot outside. From that moment on, they continually paw at my central control unit. They turned the AC up plus down plus back up again, all weekend long. They were hot, plus then cold, plus then hot, however every time I thought that my buddy and I had reached an air temperature agreement, I found somebody else staring at the control component plus mindlessly pressing buttons. My Heating plus A/C system entirely got to toil out for these past three afternoons. My wallet is also going to get a workout, because the energy bill is going to be astronomical for this month. Thanks a lot family.

Creating a sauna

I dragged a few portable heaters into the space and cranked up the power so that the maximum heat was coming out, and scooted out of the hot room for a few minutes to let my friend in the front door

My friend told me the funniest thing the other day. We were talking about our plans for the night and she indicated that she really wanted to go to the gym after work. When I made a face and told her that I absolutely hated everything about the gym I was not expecting her reaction. Instead of being annoyed or thinking I was trying to talk shit about her plans after work, she told me that she also truly hated the gym. She said the lighting, the artificial indoor air, the machines, and the other gym visitors were the bane of her existence, but she kept her membership for one particular perk… the sauna. She told me that the hot and humid air was the only thing that helped her skin, scalp, and lung health. She insisted on getting at least 3 hours of intensive sauna time each week, and therefore kept her gym membership. After thinking about this for a day or two, I pitched an idea to her. Let’s create our own sauna. Using the largest bathroom in my house, I turned on the shower to the hottest setting and closed the door to lock in the humidity. I dragged a few portable heaters into the space and cranked up the power so that the maximum heat was coming out, and scooted out of the hot room for a few minutes to let my friend in the front door. When she walked into my steamy bathroom, she actually gasped out loud. She said the space was just as hot and humid as the sauna at her gym, but the environment, price, and company was far better than she could ever expect there. The next day I loaned her my electric heaters and she cancelled her membership.

Hot tub needs better ventilation

When my husband said that he wanted to get a hot tub, I had a few reservations.

Sure, it sounded totally amazing to turn the heat up all the way, power on all the jets, and sink into a burning hot pool of water with my beloved… but my mind immediately moves straight into the more practical realities of owning a hot tub.

I know myself and my husband, and I know neither one of us is going to want to perform all the routine maintenance necessary for the hot tub. I voiced my concerns and made sure they were heard – but my husband went out and bought one anyways. Now, besides all the extra work required to run a hot tub, I have another big problem to deal with. We have to upgrade the HVAC system in order to keep the hot tub from destroying our home. You see, within two weeks of installing the hot tub, I realized that there was an awful lot of condensation on the windows all the time. The indoor air was becoming so hot and humid that the indoor air felt more like a tropical climate than a standard suburban house. I called out a specialist, and he indicated that the excessive moisture and humidity was doing a number on the wood bones of the house. He said if we didn’t upgrade our central cooling system to include high powered dehumidification, we could expect irreparable damage to our home. Thanks to this spur of the moment purchase, we now have two new maintenance service contracts – one for the hot tub and one for our high tech new HVAC system.

Baby squirrel car heat

There is something about my energy that attracts injured animals.

I don’t know what kind of vibes I put out into the world, but there is no doubt that I find more needy animals than most humans.

Most recently, I was minding my own business, just walking down the street when I found my newest little project. I heard a strange sound and looked down by my feet to see a little baby squirrel laying there on the ground. Obviously something was wrong, so I took a closer look and realized that the poor little guy had a broken leg. Flash forward about twenty minutes, and I had walked home and retrieved my car so I could drive the baby squirrel to the vet clinic. The only issue was how freaking cold the poor dude was without the warmth of his mom and littermates. Although he was wrapped in a towel, he shivered continually. I was trying to keep him comfortable with adequate heat inside the car, but considering that it was the middle of July, there was only so much I could withstand. Every so often I pulled off the road so I could step out of the car for some fresh air instead of breathing in the burning hot indoor air. When I returned back to the vehicle a moment later, it was so hot and humid that it felt like climbing into a private sauna. The baby squirrel stopped shivering eventually, so I knew that the heat was appreciated. That knowledge made my recovery far more uplifting when I wound up in the hospital with heat stroke later that afternoon.

Zone controlled rooms to meet my mood

I’ve noticed an interesting thing about myself recently following our move into a brand new house.

I realized that I truly get a “feel” in each and every room of the place, which greatly affects my interpretation of the space and my emotions about it.

This is somewhat helpful when it comes to picking out rooms for certain designations – you know I’m not going to set up my bedroom in a space that makes me feel sad or hyper, just like I wouldn’t put the family room where I tend to feel anxious. One bad thing about it, however, is that the air temperature never matches the emotional impression that I feel in each room. The house has central heating and cooling, so each room is the exact same temperature and air quality. This truly messes with my distinct impressions of each space and throws me off. That’s why I’m looking into zone controlled heating and cooling. I think it would be so great to have unique air temperatures and air qualities in every room to fit the purpose of the space. I’m thinking that the bedrooms will always be kept quite cold, because cuddling up in warm blankets requires a cool and dry environment. I want to keep the kitchen a bit warm, since the stove will pump heat into the indoor air no matter what. I’d like the bathrooms to be a bit chilly in order to reduce the mildew growth and to encourage my husband to poop faster. Finally, I think the family room should be the warmest place of all, because of how warm and fuzzy I feel after quality time with my loved ones and my wonderful indoor air quality.

Radiant heated driveway

My family is continually trying to get me to move back to Illinois, where we were all born and raised.

I am a bit torn about the topic, to be honest with you, because I miss the crap out of them.

I love my new city and all the people who live here, but nothing is ever the same as being back home with your family members and best friends, of course. There is one major factor that keeps me from deeply considering the idea… winter. Where I live now, winter consists of about 2 months of “cold” air. To be clear, this interpretation of “cold” is extremely relative to the usual air temperature. Honestly, it only gets down to about 35 degrees here during the winter seasons, which feels like spring to my midwestern bones. Back up in Illinois, on the other hand, they can expect 6 to 8 months of brutal cold, snow, and windchill that dips well below zero degrees. When I pause for even a moment and think about those frigid days, there’s no debate in my head that I”m in the right location. I recall all the mornings of trudging out into foot-deep snow and desperately chipping sharp ice off my car windshield as my mucous froze solid in my nostrils and shudder with distaste. I jokingly told my family that if they paid for a radiant heated driveway for me, I might consider coming back up to their frigid hell someday. All things considered, maybe they should just bit the bullet, escape the horrendous chill and come my direction, instead.

New yoga studio, heated floors

About 5 years ago I began doing yoga with a good friend of mine.

She encouraged me to give it a try in order to manage my stress and relieve some shoulder pain that was persistently bugging me.

I decided to give it a shot, and I was truly in love with the exercise activity after only a few classes. It wasn’t too long, however, before I realized that the cost of yoga was unsustainable for my budget each month. That’s when I began doing yoga by myself at home in order to keep my body and brain happy along with my bank account. I realized that I could get far better relaxation and mindfulness when I had some extra heat in my yoga practice, so I began adding a small electric heater to the mix. I would turn on the little portable heater about an hour before I wanted to get started, crank the tiny electric furnace up to level 11, and lock all the hot air into the room. Whenever I would enter the space after that, the indoor air would be delightfully hot. These days, I’m thinking about another HVAC addition in order to promote my yoga practice – radiant heated floors. I began thinking about the extra muscle relaxation I could obtain with all that heat in the air, and realized that I could transmit this heat directly to my body if I changed up my heating plan. If I put in radiant heated floors, I will have my body right at the source of the heat, encouraging my muscles to melt into the ground. I figure, if the added cost of the heated flooring and installation gives me stress and tense shoulders, at least I’ll be able to sooth them away.
