How to choose a Dallas roofer after a storm
Urgency is real when water is entering. It is not a reason to skip identity, insurance and a written scope.
Direct answer
After a Dallas storm, stabilize active leaks safely, document damage and notify your insurer when appropriate. Then verify each roofer’s business identity, physical address, insurance and recent references; compare multiple written scopes; and reject deductible-waiver offers, cash pressure or contracts with broad unexplained assignment language.
Texas does not issue a statewide roofer license
Because the state does not provide a general roofing-contractor license to verify, other checks carry more weight. Confirm the company’s legal identity, local presence, liability coverage, workers’ compensation position and manufacturer credentials directly with the relevant source. A truck magnet and a neighborhood flyer prove very little.
Ask for recent projects involving the same roof type and complexity. Call references with specific questions about supervision, change orders, cleanup, inspection and warranty response.
Normalize the roof scopes
Compare shingle or membrane product, underlayment, ventilation, flashing, valleys, penetrations, decking assumptions, edge metal, disposal and property protection. The lowest total can simply be the least complete scope. Require unit terms or a written decision process for concealed decking damage.
- Keep photos and emergency mitigation records.
- Do not sign a blank or incomplete contract.
- Do not let a roofer promise to erase the insurance deductible.
- Tie progress payments to observable work and delivered materials.
Keep claim decisions with licensed claim professionals
A contractor can describe construction damage and a repair scope. Insurance coverage and claim representation are different roles. Texas restricts contractors from acting as public adjusters on work they perform. Ask your insurer or a properly licensed adjuster about coverage disputes.
