Iron vs. aluminum fences for Dallas properties
‘Iron’ often describes the look, not the exact metal. Start by naming the product and coating system.
Direct answer
Aluminum is light and corrosion-resistant, while ornamental steel is generally heavier and can offer greater strength with a maintained coating. Dallas buyers should compare the actual alloy or steel product, rail and picket dimensions, coating warranty, rackability on slopes, gate frame and pool-barrier listing where applicable.
Ask what ‘iron’ means in the proposal
Many modern ornamental fences sold as iron are manufactured steel systems. True wrought-iron work, welded steel panels and rackable prefinished systems have different fabrication, repair and coating needs. The contract should identify manufacturer, product line, material and finish.
For a custom welded assembly, ask how welds and field cuts are prepared and coated. For a manufactured system, compare the written finish warranty and approved installation details.
Slope and gate openings expose the differences
A rackable panel can follow grade without stair-step gaps, but each product has limits. Wide driveway gates introduce sag, wind and operator loads that cannot be inferred from a small fence sample. Gate posts and frames need their own details.
- Confirm picket spacing and bottom clearance for the intended use.
- Check pool-barrier requirements separately when the fence encloses water.
- Compare touch-up procedures for cuts, scratches and welds.
- Inspect latches and hinges as closely as the panels.
Choose for the exposure and maintenance plan
Aluminum can be a strong choice where low weight and corrosion resistance matter. Steel can suit higher-impact or security applications when the section and coating are appropriate. Neither category is maintenance-free after impact damage; build inspection and touch-up into ownership expectations.
