How to verify a Dallas HVAC contractor license
Verify the license number, status and business relationship—not a logo that merely says ‘licensed.’
Direct answer
Texas air-conditioning and refrigeration contracting is regulated by TDLR. Before hiring, use the state’s official lookup to verify the contractor’s name, license number, class, endorsements and current status. Confirm that the licensed contractor is actually connected to the company and scope on your proposal.
Match four things exactly
Compare the person or contractor name, license number, company name and proposed type of work. A license belonging to someone with a similar name or an unrelated business is not enough. Ask the bidder to explain any mismatch before you pay a deposit.
TDLR also requires insurance for licensed ACR contractors. Ask for current proof that applies to the contracting entity, and contact the insurer if the project risk justifies direct confirmation.
A valid license does not replace a technical scope
Licensing is a threshold check. The proposal still needs model numbers, capacity, efficiency ratings, controls, electrical assumptions, refrigerant-line treatment, condensate disposal, duct work, commissioning and warranty terms. For replacements, ask how the proposed equipment was sized.
- Save a dated screenshot or PDF of the lookup result.
- Verify the license again if the project is delayed substantially.
- Do not accept another company’s permit or license number without explanation.
- Put registration and labor-warranty responsibilities in the closeout list.
Report suspicious claims to the regulator
If a company advertises regulated work without a verifiable license or misuses a number, preserve the ad and proposal. TDLR provides complaint and enforcement information through its ACR program.
