All the HVAC savings accumulate

There are many of us that stay on alert for savings of any kind.

I happen to be one of those people.

Given the changing fortunes of the economy, the value of the dollar in our house has become a big deal. I have those in my life who get a good laugh at my constant search for savings. Like, I bring my lunch every single day. If I am forced to a lunch meeting, you know I’ll be ordering the daily lunch special. It’s the same case when it comes to my grocery shopping. It starts with me and my couponing book. Then, I have specific strategies on what to buy and in what quantity. It’s all part of saving money. Just like I am with the HVAC in our house. The utility costs rose significantly a few years ago which caused me to reassess how we used the HVAC. I wanted to reduce the kilowatt hours but still keep everyone comfortable in the house. This was a trick. I had to get proactive. Starting with the doors and windows, I made sure that they were sealed tight when close and changed out the weather stripping. I also went around the entire house sealing anything that resembled a gap in the exterior. Then, I employed the drapes to stop the direct sun heating. Finally, I found a compromise on the HVAC setting that suited everyone and programmed the thermostat accordingly. All this little stuff actually added up to almost 20 percent in utility savings.
