• Often, I have learned that the best way to learn something complicated is through the pressure of a problem.

People have learned how to craft weapons, build huts, make fires, and other things from being stranded in the wilderness. Within men is the ability to learn how to survive at all costs. When my furnace broke in the middle of Winter in my RV, I had to learn how to survive the rest of the month without heat. Since my furnace was broken, I first had to learn how to thaw out frozen pipes. Through a series of turning on the water in different areas of the house, I found where the pipes were frozen, and I heated some water in an electric kettle. I poured the boiling water over the pipes to thaw it out. I also learned how to survive without a furnace by providing emergency heating. First, I bought a ton of space heaters, and I also used my propane stove as a makeshift furnace. Also, when you bake stuff in the oven, it heats up the kitchen, so I did a lot of baking. Finally, when my bills started getting more expensive, I decided to purchase a wood stove for my RV. I chop down wood, throw it in the wood stove, and kindle fire to heat my entire house. Without a thermostat, I had to learn how to regulate the temperature throw control of the amount of oxygen in the wood stove. Technology is nice, but survival is a good second option!

When I go camping, I go to escape the burdens and responsibilities of life. In my opinion, camping is really living. Before modern technology and the conveniences, people learned how to survive and thrive off of the land that was given to them. However, when the “good things in life” were developed, we lost our love for nature. That is why I enjoy camping. It is almost like returning to a lost world. However, I do wish that I had an air conditioner in my camper. When I bought my camper, it was used, and I was told that it had no air conditioner at all. I figured that the older generations had no air conditioners, so if I really wanted to enjoy nature to the fullest, I would have to learn to live without air conditioning. That was definitely a mistake! Older generations did not live in a metal death-trap that acted as a furnace at the slightest hint of sunshine. Campers are not convenient without an air conditioner because it makes it so much hotter than the outside. Though that makes you want to spend more time outside, if it is raining, you have no choice. I looked into the prices of air conditioners that are made for campers, and the prices are outrageous! However, I don’t think I am going to have a choice. Maybe if I call the HVAC company in my area, they could figure out how to fix my air conditioner! I am sure that camping won’t be very fun without an air conditioner. Maybe some technology is useful after all.

My father was one of the best fathers that a kid could have.

I am not saying that because he was my father, but rather because he was willing to spend a ton of time with me showing me things that I would need to know in the future.

I never saw him become angry, and he always talked with us children about things that mattered and what upset us. One of the greatest skills that he taught me was how to work on HVAC units. Though he knew how to do a lot of things, including mechanics, carpentry, electrical, etc., his best skill was HVAC, because his career was in the HVAC field. As a kid, he would always ask me to help him or watch him as he fixed our personal HVAC equipment. As I became old enough to work, he hired me in his HVAC company to work part-time after work. Though I would have preferred to spend all of my time with my friends, I am glad that I spent my time learning the HVAC field. When I graduated, I decided not to enter the HVAC field like my dad, but instead, I pursued a degree in engineering. My dad was not disappointed with my decision. He taught me how to fix my own HVAC equipment, among many other things, not as a way to manipulate my future, but to help me. I would not have to spend thousands of dollars to pay an HVAC worker to fix our equipment, because I knew how to myself. I am glad that an HVAC technician like my father would provide me with the knowledge and experience that I would need for the rest of my life.

I love hunting, but I don’t hunt for sport as most people do.

In my opinion, hunting is a good opportunity to kill and prepare your own meat.

It cuts down massively on the cost of food during the Winter, and it is also an exciting event for me. I look forward to hunting season every year. This year, it only took me a couple of days to shoot two deer. As soon as I had them skinned and cut, I wanted a pot roast! Little did I know that my furnace was going to ruin that wonderful meal. My wife spent hours cooking that venison roast for me to enjoy. However, when she was finished cooking, our furnace stopped working properly. Though it didn’t stop working completely, the furnace wasn’t consistently blowing heat, and it wouldn’t keep our house up to temperature. Unfortunately, this meant that the air was cold in our house, and it began to make the roast very cold! For the first few minutes, the pot roast was warm enough to heat our bodies, which was a wonderful escape from the broken furnace. But once the food started getting colder, you could see the fat and oil start to solidify on the meat. It was disgusting. I am not going to be able to enjoy this food until my furnace starts working again! I called up a friend who works on HVAC units, and I asked him to come to fix our furnace. I told him that I didn’t have too much money, but I did have a ton of frozen meat and a good pot roast dinner if he would help us out!

Our son recently returned home and he needed a helping hand for a while.

He was sheepish about this but we knew he was working hard.

He had been completely independent of us for quite some time, but jobs fall through some times. We decided to clear out the basement for his stay. My wife actually got excited about the prospect. It wasn’t just that her boy would be home for a while, but that it was high time we took advantage of the space in our basement for something other than storage. The three of us got to work clearing out the space and we bought him a futon, among other things. It was crazy just how nice everything looked when we were all done renovating, I mean it should have been obvious, but it really looked like a brand new extra room. Then came the problem of heating and cooling. We obviously did not want to expand the ductwork of our central heating and air conditioner unit into the basement. Fortunately, there were easier options. We opted for a ductless mini-split HVAC unit that provided both air conditioning and heating. It seemed too good to be true for the price and ease of installation, as well as how powerful the unit was, but it was the real deal. Our son was overwhelmed with gratitude for us being so hospitable with him, but I don’t understand how he could have imagined it was going to be any other way. We are not ashamed of helping out our son when he is down on his luck!

There was a time when I was trying to come up with every excuse not to exercise. When I started at a gym last January like literally everyone else does, there was one complaint that I had that was dragging me down. It was way too cold in there. Maybe they thought we would sweat less if they did not use as much heat. Then they would save a buck and everyone would be happy right? Well, not for me. I felt too cold and stiff when I was trying to do warm up exercises. I will admit that the cold kind of motivated me a bit to try and work up a sweat to warm up! Then I got my tax return and I realized that I don’t have to drive to some gym and pay a membership to be uncomfortable. I could convert my garage into a home gym. I certainly didn’t use it for vehicles. As it happens, I knew just the climate control unit that I could install for the garage. A buddy of mine had the same idea, which is what got me thinking about it too. He used a ductless mini-split HVAC unit to heat and cool the garage exclusively. He bought a model that was the perfect size for his garage and he bragged that he could now work out at any temperature that he pleased. I don’t know why I hadn’t decided to do the same thing sooner. Maybe, it’s because I forgot that I would be getting my tax return soon after signing up with this gym in January. I guess that’s the craziest part!

I certainly don’t want my kids over at your house if you don’t have decent air quality

For the most part, I’m an easy going type of guy. There are a few things I can’t stand though. Something in particular that drives me nuts is when people have really poor air quality in their home. This means that they don’t bother to change their air filters for their HVAC system. You can easily tell too because you will see a lot of dust floating around in the air. To think that all of that stuff is entering your lungs just by being inside the house. Usually I will just leave in a hurry because I don’t want that nasty stuff getting in my lungs and making me sick. It’s not like it’s overly difficult to change the air filters. And really now, how hard is it to call the HVAC company every once and awhile for a proper tune-up and to have your HVAC checked out. There are working parts in the HVAC system that need to be replaced every so often. If you don’t get your HVAC system maintenance, the system will eventually fail without getting the needed parts to be replaced when they are worn out. This is why I feel I can’t be good friends with people who don’t take proper care of their HVAC machines. I certainly don’t want my kids over at your house if you don’t have decent air quality. I don’t want them getting terribly sick just because you are not responsible with your major appliances in your home! Other than that, there’s not a whole lot that gets me upset. Like I said, I’m pretty laid back and I get along with most people.

Before I moved out of my parents’ house, my father always told me how important it is to take proper care of the HVAC system.

He said it was very important not only to protect the HVAC system from dirt and debris, but also to keep the air quality good. I learned from him that keeping good air quality is very crucial for our health and this is something I would never forget. To this day when I am calling the HVAC technicians to have my HVAC worked on, I always think of my father. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years back and I was so sad about that. I tried to be extra strong though for my mother’s sake. I always go to visit her and help her with things around the house, including her HVAC system. I actually got her enrolled in an HVAC system maintenance plan with the same HVAC company that I use. They actually supplied a discounted rate for the plans because we use the same maintenance plan at multiple houses. These guys are almost like family too. They are a family owned business and it’s easy to see that they care a great deal about their customers. They even knew my father when he was alive and paid their respects. It’s not easy not having my father around anymore, but I feel that I am making him proud everyday by making the right decisions in life.
