I significantly elevated my heart rate.
A few years ago, I bought a stationary bike. While I prefer to get outside and ride an actual bike, the weather is often nasty. My local area gets a lot of rain, snow, sleet and cold temperatures. For the majority of the year, I need to manage my workouts indoors. The bike offers a break from the same old routine. It avoids impact on my joints and muscles and is perfect for those days when I’m feeling sore, tired or lazy. I normally blast my music and read on my iPad while I pedal. I choose from a long list of programs and make sure to elevate the resistance level. With that style of workout, I burn approximately 400 calories in an hour. A few weeks ago, I had an extremely busy day ahead of me. I could only find time for a thirty minute workout. It was pouring rain outside and I didn’t want to disrupt the rest of the household by jumping around so early in the morning. I hopped onto the bike. Because of my limited time, I decided not to read. Instead, I chose a program that includes steep hills and I focused entirely on pedaling as fast as possible. I ended up burning 300 calories in less than 30 minutes. I was sweating profusely and breathing hard. I significantly elevated my heart rate. When I climbed off the bike, I could feel the exertion in the muscles of my legs. Later in the day, my thighs felt sore. It was such a beneficial workout.
