Getting a better workout on the stationary bike

I significantly elevated my heart rate.

A few years ago, I bought a stationary bike. While I prefer to get outside and ride an actual bike, the weather is often nasty. My local area gets a lot of rain, snow, sleet and cold temperatures. For the majority of the year, I need to manage my workouts indoors. The bike offers a break from the same old routine. It avoids impact on my joints and muscles and is perfect for those days when I’m feeling sore, tired or lazy. I normally blast my music and read on my iPad while I pedal. I choose from a long list of programs and make sure to elevate the resistance level. With that style of workout, I burn approximately 400 calories in an hour. A few weeks ago, I had an extremely busy day ahead of me. I could only find time for a thirty minute workout. It was pouring rain outside and I didn’t want to disrupt the rest of the household by jumping around so early in the morning. I hopped onto the bike. Because of my limited time, I decided not to read. Instead, I chose a program that includes steep hills and I focused entirely on pedaling as fast as possible. I ended up burning 300 calories in less than 30 minutes. I was sweating profusely and breathing hard. I significantly elevated my heart rate. When I climbed off the bike, I could feel the exertion in the muscles of my legs. Later in the day, my thighs felt sore. It was such a beneficial workout.

My friend and I use the gym differently

My friend Mary and I decided to sign up for gym memberships.

The gym is an approximately twenty minute drive from our homes. We figured that it would be fun and helpful to carpool. We hoped that holding each other accountable would prevent us from procrastinating. After one session at the gym, I realized that my friend and I have very different approaches to our fitness. Mary is mainly interested in using the tanning beds and getting a massage. Despite the many machines available, she only uses the treadmill. She reads on her iPad while she walks. Mary never gets sweaty enough to need a shower. She only wants to spend about half an hour at the gym. I workout for at least an hour and always need a shower afterward. I end up drenched in sweat. If I use the treadmill, I sprint at full speed and often add an incline. I switch between the stationary bikes and the ellipticals. I then head to the strength training machines where I target my biceps, triceps, abdominal muscles, shoulders, back, calves and outer and inner thighs. I workout with the battle ropes, lift free weights and kettlebells and hit the speed bag. Since Mary is only willing to visit the gym once per week, I’ve started heading there on my own at least four more days. I want to get my money’s worth out of the membership fees. Mary has said she doesn’t plan to renew her membership after this year. She doesn’t feel it’s worth it. I absolutely love working out at the gym and will be renewing my membership.

Running is a favorite workout

One of my favorite workouts is going for a long run.

  • Although it’s sometimes difficult to get motivated, I always feel fantastic afterward.

It’s a straightforward way to burn a tremendous amount of calories in a very short amount of time. I don’t need any specialized gear or machinery. As long as I have a good quality pair of sneakers with proper support, I’m all set. I have invested in specialized clothing to combat all types of weather. I have shorts and shirts that wick away moisture when I’m sweaty because of high heat and humidity. I have long-sleeved shirts and long pants that are thin and lightweight yet keep me warm when the temperature drops. I have moisture resistant fabrics that allow me to run in the rain. I make sure to take the time to sufficiently warm up before I run. I stretch, rotate and loosen up my various joints and muscles. I start out at a very slow job and gradually increase my pace. I try to change up my route so that I can appreciate different scenery. Some of my running paths are very flat and easy while others include challenging inclines. Running is a great opportunity to work my muscles, increase my endurance and tone muscles. It works my lungs and gets my heart beating. Because it’s a fairly mindless activity, it’s ideal for alleviating stress and clearing my head. I listen to music and let my mind wander. At the conclusion of the run, I am conscientious about a deep stretch and cool down period. I am careful to drink plenty of water.

Commercial air conditioning

I took care of the emergency HVAC repair even though it wasn’t pressing

When you end up being woken up unexpectedly in the middle of the night, it always takes approximately an hour to get your bearings.

Since I run my own business, I try to stay available for emergencies all the time. My supplier has a dedicated line for emergency work, 24 hours a day, plus when no one else can do it, I keep the cell phone on me. It seriously is crucial to have a real live person answer the emergency line, any time day or night, that is what our clients deserve, not an answering machine! One night it was nearing 5am when I got an emergency call for a broken cooling machine on a bus. I said that it didn’t sound quite like an emergency to me, plus could wait until the HVAC machine store opened in the day. Then the dude provided me with a multiple hundred dollar bonus just to make the repair call plus look at the AC machine, plus this would be on top of whatever the maintenance costs happened to be. It turns out the guy was the employer for a rock band, plus when the cooling machine on the tour bus broke they went entirely crazy. I came to find out that they broke it themselves, because they were aggravated that it wasn’t cooling the bus down enough. I guess all the booze plus drugs had them feeling a little too hot, because they ripped the control unit out of the wall altogether. It’s a good thing this was a straight-forward fix, basically I just had to upgrade the control unit, plus then check the refrigerant levels in the HVAC machine itself.

I decided to go for the emergency HVAC repair

I came to find out that they broke it totally themselves, because they were miserable because it wasn’t cooling the bus down to the desired temperature control settings. I guess all the booze and drugs had them feeling overheated, because they ripped the temperature control out of the wall entirely. Thankfully this was a relatively easy fix, basically I just needed to upgrade the temperature control, and then check the refrigerant levels in the system.
