An emergency AC call worth taking

When you get woken up unexpectedly in the middle of the night, it always takes a minute to get your bearings.

  • Since I run my own business, I try to stay available for emergencies twenty four hours a day.

My company has a dedicated line for emergency work, 24 hours a day, and when no one else can do it, I keep the phone with me. It is important to have a real live person answer the emergency line, any time day or night, that is what our customers deserve, not an answering machine! One night it was almost 5am when I got an emergency call for a broken air conditioner on a bus. I said that it didn’t sound like an emergency to me, and could wait until the HVAC store opened in the morning. Then the dude offered me a five hundred dollar bonus just to make the service call and look at the AC, and this would be on top of whatever the repair costs were. It turns out the guy was the manager for a rock band, and when the air conditioner on the tour bus broke they went ballistic. I came to find out that they broke it themselves, because they were angry it wasn’t cooling the bus down enough. I guess all the booze and drugs had them feeling hot, because they ripped the thermostat out of the wall entirely. Thankfully this was an easy fix, basically I just needed to replace the thermostat, and then check the refrigerant levels in the system itself.
